As per his family, Kohli showed an early fondness for cricket at the age of three.

Due to a brain attack, Kohli's father passed away on December 18, 2006. His father was a major source of support for his cricket training when he was a youngster.

Kohli was named the under-15 team's captain for the 2003–04 campaign.

On November 23, 2006, he played his first-class debut against Tamil Nadu in the opening Ranji Trophy match of the season.
